creative me monday 6:super hero

my younger son turns 3 next week. for the past week or so, he's been running around the house with his winter coat hood on his head and the rest of the coat draped behind him leaving his arms out saying, 'i'm a super hero!'. i have been planning to make both of my sons a super hero cape with jenny's tutorial, but wasn't going to make one as a birthday present. after this past week i changed my mind. i think jenny's idea of using a tshirt is genius, but my son loves hoods so i was trying to figure out a way to make a hood to sew onto the cape. i was stressing out about it a little bit when a friend of mine suggested via facebook that i use a hooded shirt. duh!!! what a great idea. :) i found a practically new hooded sweatshirt at salvation army. i cut out the cape shape and then wanted to add a stencil on the back.

i've never tried a freezer paper stencil before and i was a little nervous, but excited to try something new. i used a tutorial from dana over at made. her tutorials are great! she made it sound so easy and it was! it took me a little bit to figure out what design i wanted, but i am pretty happy with what i decided on.

while the paint was drying, our cat jumped up directly onto the the cape and stuck his paw in the wet paint. i yelled and he jumped off leaving a lone paw print. i was so mad!! it does add a little bit of 'character' to the cape. my son loves jaguars. i'm thinking i'll just tell him that a jaguar was saying hi or something. here's the finished design on the back complete with paw print.

i made wrist bands and a mask as well. i used the waistband of the sweatshirt for the wrist bands. i did a star cut out in a piece of navy material and sewed over the red and then hot glued velcro to close them.

my older son wanted to model them. i found him running around the house a little later with them on. his birthday is coming up in june. i think he may need a set for himself. :)

the mask i layered the blue and the red again and used a piece of elastic for around the back.

i love the way the whole set turned out and i know my son is going to love it. i can't wait to see what it looks like all together on him!!
